A message from Archie,
the man behind Hawkwood miniature painting.

Hi, I’m Archie the founder of Hawkwood miniature painting.

Model soldiers have always fascinated me, and I still fondly remember my favourite shop being the local stack ‘em high model shop of the early 80’s.

By the age of nine I had amassed a huge Eshi 20mm collection, mainly Rome versus Barbarians and Napoleonic. This rooting in history has remained and it stayed even during my fantasy stage as I gravitated to human, dwarf, and undead (human) armies. Large blocks with unit heraldry.

During secondary school I got into the gaming club and found Warhammer fantasy role play and then 40K when it was released. I collected as many figures as possible and tried to paint them moving from enamels to acrylics. I went to college and studied art, but I didn’t really enjoy it much, so I drifted into work finally becoming a Master Thatcher. I happily worked for 20 years before I crushed four vertebrae and after two years of working in pain, I had to leave the thatching world and look for a new challenge.

During the last 25 years I’ve had a group of friends I’ve had the pleasure of playing war games with. It quickly became apparent I was better at painting than playing the game, so I delved deeper into painting and having the best-looking army. I think I was a better player than I thought as my gaming friends won the last doubles tournament at Warhammer world before our beloved Warhammer fantasy was destroyed. Since then one of my friends represented British interests at the Mantic Kings of war world tournament held in America after qualifying through the UK tournament scene.

After 20 years of painting my friend’s miniatures for ‘mates’ rates’, the back injury, and a need for a new career led me to create Hawkward Miniature Painting. Now I can spend my time utilising my hard-earned painting knowledge and skills for you, as I have my many already satisfied customers.

why we're called hawkwood miniature painting

If you’re wondering why we’re called Hawkwood Miniature Painting, let us explain. As well as our passion for miniature painting, we have a life-long love of military history, as such when thinking of a company name Sir John Hawkwood of Condottiere fame became the obvious choice.

If you’ve never heard of Sir John Hawkwood one of the things he was well known for was his honour. When taking a contract, he always showed unwavering loyalty, and persistent commitment to fulfilling the orders and the obligations to contracts he took. His loyalty to contracts mirrors our commitment to you and your vision.

It could also be said that in many we’re a modern-day painting mercenary selling our skills with a brush rather than a sword.
